Mentoring Question Framework

These questions from Mentoring Matters offer some examples for how to create deeper and more meaningful interaction and results in mentoring.

Directions:

1. Make two columns on a piece of paper

2. Label the first “Me”

3. Label the second column the name of your mentee (eg “Bob”, or “Gina”).

4. Answer each question one at a time and write your personal answers in column 1.

5. Then answer for your mentee in column 2 (eg “Gina’s top five biggest dreams are…”).

Questions

1. What are my biggest dreams?

  • What are my top five biggest dreams?
  • What are my most important dreams?
  • What do I dream of doing or being?
  • What do I really want most?

Then, spend some time thinking about your dreams:

  • Why do they matter to me?
  • Who would I be without them?
  • How important are they?
  • Are they central to my life?
  • Are they a lot of fun?

2. What are my biggest fears?

Answer for yourself in column two and for your mentee in column three.

3. What is my biggest source or object of anger?

Answer, following the same patter as before.

As a mentor, facing our fears and anger is essential. Even if you never share the conversation with anyone, doing these exercises can help you ability to mentor, lead, empathize, care for, and understand the people you work with.

4. What three things do I most need from my mentor in the next few months?

Answer for yourself, then for your mentee (eg “What three things does Gina need from me in the next few months?”)

5. What three things do I need my mentor to be (rather than just do)?

Note the significant difference between doing and being.

6. If some scientific discovery gave me an extra hour in each day, what would I do with it?

Use column two to answer this for yourself. In column three of this question, write what you would recommend for your mentee to do with the extra hour.

7. Based on my answers to questions 1 through 6, what one thing do want to change in my life?

Write either the one thing that would make the most positive difference in your life if you changed it right now or the one thing you really think you should change. Then make a plan to implement it, and get to work! Once you’ve done this, do the same for your mentee, and recommend the number-one change you came up with. Remember, you can’t compel change, but explain how you think this would improve their life.

Many of your proteges would benefit from going through this exercise themselves, so when you find one you think is ready, pass a copy along, and be ready to offer help as needed.
